Nasty Funky...

Well hello there beautiful people, we're The Beatards-
DJO, Chuck Wild and UTK the INC !!!!

DJO is the DJ extraordinaire, Chuck Wild is the bug-out Maestro, and UTK, the Universally Talented Kid, is holdin' down crowd control. We all handle vocal and production duties within the group, as well as being gentlemen and guys you'd almost take home to momma and then realize you were effin crazy. DJO and UTK both hail from the exotic shores of Maryland while Chuck has bounced around from New Hampshire to San Francisco and finally NYC where we now all reside. In addition to musical joy-ocity each 'tard brings his own unique background into the fold as well. DJO is an up-and-coming Kimchee(korean pickled cabbage) chef whose deliciousness has been featured,we talkin full page plus photo, in the New York Times. He's also the first ever "hip-hop theater" DJ. Look it up! Chuck Wild aka Captain Planet is a salsa and merengue FIEND, spinning one of the sickest dance parties recorded in recent history every thursday night at Bembe (Williamsburg,BK). He also has released his World-flavored beat monstrosities in the form of two albums on Bastard Jazz called Gumbo Funk and Speakin Nuyorican. UTK is helping to pay the bills from acting and was recently nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Best Featured Actor in a play(Animals out of Paper, 2nd Stage) and can be seen in numerous films. On a more humorous note, he can also be seen in the Mcdonald's commercial where dude is walkin around the city askin what he can get for a dollar. The Mcdonald's employee is UTK! So for better or worse, we be coming from ALL ANGLES!

SS: How did you get the name beatards?
B: There's no way around this one. We've been trying to tell people it's because we've got "the beat in our hearts" but that's as flimsy as a twizzler on a speedboat. For the First time ever: The TRUTH. We started out as the DeadBeats, which in retrospect is pretty negative but that's not why we changed the name. An original member left the group leaving O and UTK to start afresh. And start afresh we did....as the Retarded Beatles...aka THE BEATARDS...huh that wasn't nearly as revealing a piece of information as we thought.

SS: Give us the inside scoop of the group...
B: We met sky-dive-speed-dating. Sike that'd just be too awesome. DJO and UTK met while both were performing in a hip-hop spoken word play called History of the Word and struck up a fast friendship based on their other-wordly outlook on life and their mutual love of a certain botanical. O started the party Mixtape Riot! (and actually came up with our magnificent monicker) and enlisted UTK to host the festivities. At this point no "Beatards" music was being made we were creating remixes and otherwise just partying and toasting. THEN as we said, somebody left the group which left a void to fill. Chuck Wild and UTK were both dating girls who LIVED together and would groggily and awkwardly meet while waiting for the bathroom in the morning for months before realizing a)both had names and b) both rocked the fuck out. After this simple and great discovery all parties were introduced to one-another and the group The Beatards became a reality. Incidentally both girlfriends are now exs and UTK and Chuck Wild are now roommates-ah the irony. We've been making music for about 3 years now and are only getting better both in our product and how we communicate with one another. The recording process can always be a trying one but like i said, we're gentlemen. We take turns, we clean up after ourselves and we trust each other's opinion.

SS: How has your music evolved since you started out?
B: The music has become more epic in many ways. Lush harmonies, huge hooks and b-b-b-bangin beats. In the same way as the sound has become more complex, our approach to making it has simplified. The studio sessions are getting shorter and the songs are getting better. Efficiency. That's the name of the game. In terms of our sound, 3 individuals are now starting to sound like a (cue cheesy strings) team. We've developed an understanding of...say...the fact that UTK is always gonna want more harmony because he grew up on mid 90's r&b or that....O wants the bass drum to really BOOM and BAP,we call him high on thump low on chump, and Chuck Wild will always take a straight bass line and wanna make it funky. These are great things to understand and then utilize to create a focused cohesive project that sounds unlike anything else out there right now...in our humble opinion, of course.

And you can see us Oct 20-24 at the CMJ festival (dates not set but we'll follow up).
